- Last month (4/95), Dean Witten premiered "Concerto for Solo Percussion and Orchestra" by composer Daniel Dorff, with the Haddonfield Symphony, conducted by Alan Gilbert (asst cond of the Cleveland Orch). The concerto is 21 minutes and uses mallets, drums/blocks, and no weird hard-to-find instruments. The musical style is very lyrical, with a general progression from dissonant to tonal. The last movement is a Xylophone showpiece which can be played separately. The solo part itself is for sale from Theodore Presser Company (610-525-3636), and the Xylophone movement with piano reduction will be out later this year. I'll be glad to send a tape (no charge) to any percussionists who may be in the position to play a concerto with their orchestra.
